Making the case for Jeff Lockie and Vernon Adams
It's the question on everybody's mind in Eugene: Who will be Oregon's starting quarterback this season?
Both Vernon Adams Jr. and Jeff Lockie are going to have a real shot at earning the job during fall camp. The Oregonian's Tyson Alger explains what both Jeff Lockie and Vernon Adams bring to the table. First up is Lockie:
"He's done everything that's been asked of him. He stuck with the program for the last two years as he sat behind Mariota and had to deal with a backup quarterback battle with Jake Rodrigues. He hasn't been bad in limited action and has by all accounts played well during the spring. He knows the playbook, he knows the players and there are zero distractions surrounding him."
And the case for Vernon Adams:
"For all the confidence Oregon's coaches have said they have in Jeff Lockie, their pursuit of Adams didn't seem to show it. Adams has been one of the best players at the FCS level for the last three years and has shown he can compete in the Pac-12. If there are any doubts, go ahead and ask Oregon State and Washington their thoughts on the quarterback. Adams will have to make up for lost time this fall, but he's played in a similar type of offense at Eastern and has the playmaking type of ability that might make the departure of Mariota a little easier to handle."
For the Oregon Ducks the decision will come down to this: Does the team need the on-field experience of Adams or the in-program experience of Lockie?
