Mahomes proving he's right QB to lead Texas Tech resurgence

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes and the Texas Tech Red Raiders ripped through the Arkansas Razorbacks on Saturday, and in blasting the SEC team they announced to the Big 12 that they're not the same pushover as a season ago.

One year after getting throttled by the Razorbacks in Lubbock, the Red Raiders (3-0) returned the favor in Fayetteville 35-24. Mahomes was brilliant, completing 26 of 30 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown while connecting with seven different receivers.

Mahomes also rushed for 58 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He threw two interceptions, but was never rattled in commanding the offense coach Kliff Kingsbury operated so flawlessly 13 years ago. Mahomes took over the Texas Tech offense late in 2014 and didn't relinquish the starting job despite a heated competition with Davis Webb.

Mahomes showed signs that he could deliver Tech a poised pocket thrower in limited time last season, including a near-heroic comeback against Baylor that fell just short, but earned a congratulatory back slap from Bears coach Art Briles.

The Red Raiders improved to 3-0 heading into Big 12 play, and they have to be licking their chops over next week's opponent, No. 3 TCU, which has been depleted defensively by injury. The Horned Frogs destroyed Tech last season, racking up 82 points.
