Latest hire complete's Fuente's first Virginia Tech staff
On Monday, Virginia Tech’s first-year head coach Justin Fuente completed his staff by naming former Memphis defensive coordinator, Galen Scott, his new linebackers’ coach.
The two know each other well, as Scott served under Fuente at Memphis in 2015 as the Tigers’ defensive coordinator and was Memphis’ linebackers’ coach from 2000-2014.
"We’re pleased to round out our coaching staff with the addition of Galen Scott,” Fuente said in a statement released by the school. “Coach Scott will be a solid complement to coach Bud Foster and the rest of our defensive staff. Galen has been instrumental in developing opportunistic defenses and award-winning players throughout his career. I know he’s excited to help build on the tradition of great defense that has been established at Virginia Tech.”
Prior to Memphis, Scott worked with Fuente at Illinois State from 2001-06 where coached the linebackers while Fuente served as quarterbacks coach and later offensive coordinator.
In 2014, Memphis’ defense was ranked 28th in the nation in yards allowed (349.5), 11th in scoring defense (19.5 ppg) en route to an AAC championship. It was the Tigers first title since 1971.
As a player, Scott was a three-time all-American linebacker at Illinois State and set the school’s career record for tackles.
