Lane Kiffin becoming even more likely candidate for LSU OC job

As the coaching carousel starts slowing, Lane Kiffin becomes a more and more likely candidate for the LSU offensive coordinator job.

Current LSU head coach Ed Orgeron has had his eyes on Kiffin for some time now, and for good reason. In Kiffen’s time at Alabama, the team has maintained an undefeated record and has achieved the title of the SEC’s highest scoring offense.

With a number of programs recently filling their hole at the head coaching position, the odds of the current Alabama offensive coordinator going somewhere other than Baton Rouge are getting slimmer by the hour.

Kiffin has been a contender for a number of coaching jobs with other universities, but has yet to land one. Rumors swirled that Houston, Florida Atlantic and USF were all considering filling their coaching gaps with Kiffin. Since, Houston has hired former Alabama offensive coordinator Major Applewhite. USF has also solved their dilemma at the coaching position, adding former Texas head coach Charlie Armstrong.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban has made comments on the situation, stating that he would like to see Kiffin become a head coach with another program. Saban has not said anything to indicate that Kiffin, the Tide’s offensive coordinator of three years, will be staying on through this year’s playoff.

If Kiffin somehow does not wind up on the Tigers’ coaching staff, some other probable candidates for the job are Alabama offensive analyst Steve Sarkisian, former Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich, and current Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Canada.

All three coaches have greatly contributed to their respective programs, as Helfrich recruited and molded Marcus Mariota into the Heisman Trophy winner that he is today. Canada had successful seasons with NC State, Wisconsin, Indiana and Northern Illinois. Sarkisian gained experience with both USC and Washington.

LSU recently filled their coordinator needs on the defensive end by extending Dave Aranda, making him potentially the highest paid at his position in 2017. The program is expected to name an offensive coordinator in the near future.

Will rival coach Kiffin be the answer to LSU’s offensive woes?
