Kirby Smart named Defensive Coordinator of the Week
Kirby Smart, the oft-criticized defensive coordinator for Alabama, may have his issues with spread offenses featuring a dynamic quarterback, but a traditional offense appears to have no answer for his defensive scheme.
Georgia was the latest victim to discover this, after being run out of Sanford Stadium in the downpour that hit Athens Saturday. Following his unit's performance, Coaching Search named Smart the Defensive Coordinator of the Week in college football.
Two weeks after Georgia quarterback Greyson Lambert set the FBS completion percentage record, he was benched before halftime. That’s how good Smart’s defense played. Alabama held the Dawgs to 11-for-31 passing, with three interceptions (one pick-six), forced four fumbles and held UGA to 3-for-17 on third down. Outside of one 83-yard run from Nick Chubb when the game was out of hand, he averaged 3.3 yards per rush.
With the Tide facing yet another old-school offense in Arkansas, expect the defense to carry the Tide to victory yet again this week.
