Kennedy's third FG of night lifts Youngstown to win, 17-14
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) — Tevin McCaster rushed for 116 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown and Zak Kennedy kicked three field goals, including a 34-yarder with 26 seconds remaining, as Youngstown State rallied to defeat Southern Illinois 17-14 Saturday night.
SIU (2-3, 0-2 Missouri Valley Football Conference) came in averaging 40 points per game and Youngstown (2-3, 1-1) averaging 30, but the Salukis led just 7-6 entering the fourth quarter before they extended their lead on a 1-yard run by Matt DeSomer, who was starting in place of injured quarterback Sam Staub.
The Penguins responded with their own long drive with McCaster going in from the 1 with 4:36 to go and Montgomery VanGormer throwing a strike to Zach Farrar over the middle for the tying two-point conversion. Youngstown got the ball back with 3½ minutes left after a short punt to the SIU 39 and drove to get Kennedy in range for the game-winning kick.
