John Oliver makes good on FIFA promise with Bud Light Lime

JBy Mike Cole

John Oliver is a man of his word when it comes to soccer.

Oliver, host of HBO’s hit weekly comedic news show “Last Week Tonight,” has made a habit of hammering FIFA in recent weeks, a practice that actually dates all the way  back to last summer. A devout soccer fan himself, Oliver has used much of his show’s time in attempts to expose the corruption and flaws that have been a hallmark of FIFA under president Sepp Blatter.

So when FIFA came under fire a couple of weeks ago with help from the U.S. government, Blatter was pleased. He wasn’t completely satisfied, though, thinking nothing really would change unless Blatter was removed from power. Moreover, it was unlikely Blatter would be going anywhere unless corporate sponsors put the pressure on FIFA. If those sponsors — like Adidas, McDonald’s and Anheuser Busch — did put pressure on FIFA to get Blatter’s resignation, Oliver would gladly consume their products.

In a surprising move, Blatter resigned last week. There hasn’t yet been any indication that sponsors played a role in forcing him out, but Oliver didn’t care. On Sunday night’s show, he was more than willing to make good on his promise.
