Jackson State beats MVSU 24-5 for first win of season (Oct 28, 2017)
ITTA BENA, Miss. (AP) Jordan Johnson ran for 162 yards and three touchdowns and Jackson State picked up its first win of the season, 24-5 over Mississippi Valley State on Saturday.
Johnson scored on 12-yard runs in the second and third quarters and added a 4-yard TD run in the final quarter for the Tigers (1-7, 1-4 Southwestern Athletic Conference), who hadn't won a game since Oct. 22, 2016, - a 21-13 victory at Texas Southern.
Nicholas Jacquemin staked the Delta Devils (2-6, 1-3) to a 3-0 first-quarter lead, but MVSU would not score again until picking up a fourth-quarter safety on an errant punt snap in the Tigers' end zone.
The Tigers totaled 278 yards rushing on 50 carries, while holding MVSU to 39 yards on the ground on 23 rushes. MVSU's Jeff Even and Dewayne Betts combined for just 115 yards passing. Jackson State had six sacks.
Jackson State leads the all-time series 59-6-2.
