Iowa wrestlers shatter NCAA outdoor attendance record

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) The Iowa wrestling team shattered the NCAA attendance record Saturday in the first meet ever held in a Division I football stadium.

The Hawkeyes beat top-ranked Oklahoma State 18-16 at Kinnick Stadium in front of a crowd of more than 42,000. Penn State held the previous mark of 15,996 set back in 2013.

Iowa had a special mat marked with football yard lines placed in the south end zone at Kinnick, and the crowd filled the end zone seats and stretched all the way to the opposing 20-yard line.

Concerns about adverse weather never came to pass. Sunny skies and temperatures in the low 50s greeted wrestlers, who wore stocking caps and jackets.
