A look at the newest AP Poll and where the Iowa Hawkeyes stand

After another exciting week of college football, that included a win for Iowa football, the AP Poll had a lot of movement. The Iowa Hawkeyes defeated Purdue 49-35 and got closer to returning to the AP Poll top-25.

The Hawkeyes received seven votes in this week’s poll, but Iowa has a chance to crack the top-25 with an upset win over Wisconsin on Saturday.

Despite falling to Ohio State in overtime at home, the Wisconsin Badgers stayed in the top-10. They dropped from eight to 10, which is a little surprising considering a week ago Tennessee stayed the ninth ranked team despite losing to Texas A&M in overtime. Still, the Badgers have a slight chance of cracking the College Football Playoff if they win out, and they’ll be the first ranked team Iowa plays this season.

The Big Ten once again has four teams in the top-10. Ohio State remained the second ranked team, although Michigan jumped Clemson to be ranked third after the Tigers nearly lost to North Carolina State. A missed field goal to end regulation by the Wolfpack gave Clemson an extra life, which they took advantage of in overtime.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers jumped up from 10 and swapped places with Wisconsin, being ranked eighth in the nation after a hard-fought win over Indiana.

Despite nearly losing to Tulsa, the Houston Cougars jumped two spots to #11. Other mid-majors in the top-25 include: Boise State (14), Western Michigan (20) and Navy (24).

The biggest jump in this week’s ranking came from West Virginia who jumped eight spots to #12 following a win over Texas Tech. Ole Miss dropped nine spots, the farthest drop this week, to #23 after falling to 3-3 after a loss to Arkansas. The Rebels are the only ranked team with three losses or a .500 or worse record.

Here’s a look at the AP Poll top-10 this week:

1. Alabama Crimson Tide 7-0

2. Ohio State Buckeyes 6-0

3. Michigan Wolverines 6-0

4. Clemson Tigers 7-0

5. Washington Huskies 6-0

6. Texas A&M 6-0

7. Louisville Cardinals 5-1

8. Nebraska Cornhuskers 6-0

9. Baylor Bears 6-0

10. Wisconsin Badgers 4-2

The Iowa Hawkeyes will have a tall task this week, as they prepare to take on the tenth ranked Wisconsin Badgers.
