Indiana St. player ejected for 'targeting'

Indiana State defensive back Carlos Aviles was ejected for ''targeting'' during the third quarter of Thursday night's season opener at Indiana.

Aviles was penalized when he raced down to cover a punt and slammed full speed, helmet-to-helmet into Hoosiers returner Shane Wynn. The junior receiver stayed down on the ground briefly, before walking to the bench. Fans booed as the replay was shown, and after announcing the penalty, the official announced Aviles had been thrown out - drawing cheers from the crowd.

Under a new NCAA rule, players who ''target'' and contact defenseless players will receive a 15-yard penalty and be ejected.

Aviles was the second player ejected from Thursday night. Indiana's Jake Reed was thrown out in the first half after officials spotted him throwing a punch.
