Hayes, Jacquemin lead Jackson State past MVSU 23-7

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Jarrad Hayes passed for one touchdown, ran for another and Christian Jacquemin kicked three field goals as Jackson State won a homecoming game for the first time in three seasons, downing Mississippi Valley State 23-7 on Saturday.

Jackson State (3-2, 2-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) built a 20-0 halftime lead, including a 4-yard TD pass from Hayes to Romello Shumake. Hayes then capped an 84-yard drive with a rushing TD. The Tigers piled up 206 yards on the ground while holding Mississippi Valley State to minus-23.

Jacquemin added field goals of 34, 47 and 28 yards.

MVSU remained winless at 0-5, 0-2. Jett Even passed for 182 yards but was sacked three times and intercepted once.

Charles Anderson, Malik Hamner and Brian Mitchell each had sacks for the Jackson State defense, which also made five tackles-for-loss for 50 yards and broke up six passes.
