Gundy says he would have put Sanders on first team

The Football Writers' Association of America recently released its 75th Anniversary All-American team and running back Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State made the second team.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, who was teammates with Sanders from 1986-1988 disagreed. Sort of.

"I'm not going to argue any of those," Gundy said of the picks to The Oklahoman. “I would pick (Sanders) if I was picking a team, but I’m sure people from Ohio would take Archie and the ones from down south would take Herschel.”

Sanders won the Heisman Trophy in 1988. He set 34 NCAA records and went on to rush for more than 15,000 yards in the NFL with Detroit.

“In my opinion, if he plays a few more years … and if he was behind an offensive line that was decent, the guy probably rushes for 25,000 yards,” Gundy said of Sanders' NFL career.  "I’m probably partial to him, but he was pretty good."

Archie Griffin of Ohio State and Herschel Walker of Georgia were the first team selections.
