Frank Beamer resting at home after throat surgery

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) Virginia Tech football coach Frank Beamer is recovering from throat surgery.

The Hokies' head team physician, Dr. Gunnar Brolinson, says the procedure ''went as planned, without complications, and Beamer simply needs some rest before he returns to his normal routine.''

Neither Brolinson nor the school gave further details about the nature of the procedure, or when it was performed, but Brolinson says it was something that was put on hold until the end of the regular season.

The Hokies beat Virginia 24-20 in their regular season finale to qualify for a bowl game for the 22nd consecutive season, the nation's second-longest streak behind Florida State, which has 32 in a row.

Brolinson says Beamer, 68, will return to the practice field as soon as possible and that he expects him to be on the sidelines with the Hokies at their bowl game, to be announced Sunday.

Beamer, whose victory against Virginia was his 11th straight against his in-state rival, is the active leader among Bowl Subdivision head coaches with a career record of 272-138-4. He's in his 28th season at Virginia Tech.
