Former Miami Hurricane Quan Muhammad Headed to Hampton
Quan Muhamad who was dismissed by the Miami Hurricanes before the start of the 2016 season has announced he is headed to Hampton. Muhammad and linebacker Jermaine Grace were dismissed after being implicated in a scandal involving a Miami Beach rental car agency.
Peter Ariz of CanesInsight.Com reported last night that former Miami Hurricane Muhammad made his decision to sign with the Pirates, a historically black college in Virginia that belongs to the FCS Mideastern Athletic Conference. By not signing with an FBS school, Muhammad is eligible to play immediately. Muhammad is not listed on Hampton’s roster. CanesInsight is reporting that Muhammad is enrolled in classes and is expected to begin practicing soon.
The alleged involvement with South Beach Exotic Rentals was not the first time that Muhammad was in some kind of trouble during his time with the Hurricanes. Muhammad was suspended for the season and from the University for the fall semester in 2014 after a fight with another student and missed the 2015 season opener for violating undisclosed team rules.
Muhammad was the top rated player in Miami’s 2013 recruiting class. He was the number one player in Louisiana, the 47th best player overall and the fifth best defensive end. Grace was the Hurricanes’ ninth best player in the same class.
Muhammad would add to a Hampton defense that was 15th last year in FBS in total defense. In 17 games in his career with Miami, Muhammad finished with 39 tackles, seven sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss.
Grace still hopes to return to play for Miami this season. His new attorney Jason Stetchen told the Miami Herald that his client is evaluating all his options. Grace had 79 tackles last season, which led the team.
The dismissal of Grace and fellow linebacker Juwon Young in June pushed three true freshman linebackers into the starting lineup for the opener against Florida A&M. The “Canes beat the Rattlers 70-3 in Mark Richt’s Miami debut.
The frosh triumvirate of Shaq Quarterman, Zach McCloud, and Michael Pinkney combined for eight tackles and three assists. Those numbers should rise as the games become more competitive.
Another suspended Hurricane, Defensive Lineman Gerald Willis is expected to return for Saturday’s game against Florida Atlantic at Hard Rock Stadium. Defensive Coordinator Manny Diaz is going to need contributions from everyone. The Owls play an up-tempo offense. They had 79 plays in only 29 minutes of possession time in their season opening 38-30 win over FCS Southern Illinois.
The Hurricanes and Owls kickoff at 6:00pm EDT at Hard Rock Stadium Saturday.
