FIU has intriguing options to fill head coaching vacancy

Ron Turner is out at FIU as we reported Sunday morning. Turner was never able to get any traction there and FIU was 0-4 this season, but the job will have some intriguing options because of its South Florida location. The downside is that FIU has a lame-duck AD in Pete Garcia who will be stepping down in July 2018.

The most interesting name in the mix here is former Miami head coach Butch Davis who is still very close with Garcia from his days together at Miami and the Cleveland Browns.

The 64-year-old Davis really wanted the UM vacancy last winter but that job went to Mark Richt. I still think it's a remote chance Davis (probably around 30 percent), now a TV analyst, jumps at this, but realistically, this is may be Davis' last hope at coaching in college.

Davis was 51-20 in helping rebuild Miami back from hefty NCAA sanctions. One of the best recruiters and evaluators in the history of college football, Davis -- a Jimmy Johnson protege -- put together arguably the most talented team the college game has ever seen in the Canes 2001 national title squad, but he wasn't around to coach it because he -- and Garcia -- had left for the NFL.

A few other names to keep in mind: Miami DC Manny Diaz, a Miami native; former Canes offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch, who has done a very good job working for Jim Harbaugh at Michigan; Kentucky OC Eddie Gran, who has deep recruiting ties to the area; Tennessee assistant Larry Scott, who was UM's interim head coach after Al Golden got fired last fall; and former FIU assistant Geoff Collins, the Florida DC. I suspect almost all of these guys would listen if FIU called.
