Edsall contract includes buyout provision

A detail of Randy Edsall's contract extension may be more noteworthy than the extension itself for the Maryland football program and its fans.

The Baltimore Sun points out the extension includes not only a raise but that a buyout of $500,000 was added to the contract. That goes into effect after the 2016 season.

Previously, Edsall would have been owed the full remaining value of his deal if the university wanted to fire him.

Edsall is 20-30 as head coach of the Terps, who finished a surprising third in the Big Ten East last season, their first as members of the conference.

Maryland was 75-50 in the previous 10 seasons under head coach Ralph Friedgen, who was fired after going 9-4 in 2010.
