Duke to wear new 'Battleship Grey' helmets against Virginia Tech

Duke football isn't exactly known for its uniform variety, but the program will be breaking out a cool new commemorative helmet in a few weeks.

The Blue Devils will wear these "Battleship Grey" helmets on November 5th when they face off against Virginia Tech. The lids will honor the 1942 Duke team that went 9-0 before facing off again Oregon State in the Rose Bowl, eventually losing 20-16.

That year, the Rose Bowl was moved from Pasadena to Duke Stadium, as the government feared that the game -- held just a few weeks after the attacks on Pearl Harbor -- would be susceptible to more attacks.

Here are some details about the helmet, courtesy of Duke:

The distinctive Battleship Grey matte helmet will be complemented with a black facemask and a decal replicating a logo used by the 88th Infantry Division of the United States Army that held the nickname “Blue Devils” during World War II. In addition, Duke’s standard black jersey will don an official Rose Bowl 75th Anniversary commemorative patch.

I've got to say, these helmets are a lot more interesting and appealing than Duke's typical headwear, which just features the school's 'D' logo on the side. It'll be cool to see these in action.
