Does Houston loss open door for Texas in Herman Sweepstakes?
Houston’s playoff hopes dashed by hard charging Midshipmen.
The Houston Cougars lost to the Navy Midshipmen 46-40 which effectively ends the team’s College Football Playoff hopes. Houston has been riding high following its huge Week 1 win over then top-five Oklahoma. The Cougars were looking to invade the College Football Playoff.
The Cougars still have a chance to get an invite to a New Year’s Six bowl but need to look impressive and need other Group of Five teams to lose. Houston does have a big opportunity later this year when they will face off against Louisville and Lamar Jackson.
Also the question will pop up about his future in Houston. Charlie Strong is firmly fixed on the hot seat following three straight losses and Herman is a popular choice among big money donors and Texas alum.
Now Herman will have options as LSU has already fired Les Miles and promoted Ed Orgeron to Interim Head Coach. Baylor is also in the market after the May dismissal of Art Briles. These are only a few of the dismissals that are likely to happen between now and the end of the season.
Make no mistake about it if Texas does indeed fire Charlie Strong they will spend money on Herman and they have the resources to do so. Other schools like LSU and Baylor are Power Five schools but compared to Texas they are limited by their resources. Baylor is a private institution with a small alumni base and LSU is supported by a state that is dealing with its own financial shortcomings.
The coaching carousel is going to be very Interesting this year. Already Baylor and LSU are going to be looking for coaches and quite possibly you could add Texas, USC and Houston to that list. And any discussion about possible coaching changes begins and ends with Tom Herman.
