DeVon Edwards Suffers Season-Ending Injury at Notre Dame

The Duke Chronicle announced that All-ACC safety and kick returner DeVon Edwards will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL and MCL.

Duke Football received some bad news in the aftermath of their upset win over Notre Dame, and will lose another starter and team captain to a season-ending injury. An MRI confirmed that versatile defender and special teams return DeVon Edwards will miss the rest of the season for the Blue Devils.

DeVon Edwards injured his knee during his first kick return on Saturday’s matchup against Notre Dame. As a redshirt senior, the injury also most likely means his college career is over. The injury is a huge hit for the Blue Devils, who will have to continue the season without one of their most versatile players who makes an impact as a leader on defense and special teams. Head coach David Cutcliffe released this statement shortly after it was confirmed Edwards would miss the season:

This isn’t the first time the Blue Devils have faced adversity dealing with injuries, losing starting quarterback Thomas Sirk for the year shortly before the season began. The coaching staff is evaluating their options, with David Cutcliffe noting, “I don’t think one person can replace DeVon Edwards, there will be multiple opportunities for people. We’ve got a week to go to work. We will find the right combination of things to do.” Most likely junior Alonzo Saxton II will step in for Edwards at safety and running back Shaun Wilson will replace him as a kick returner.

Duke Football won’t have much time to recover from their upset win over Notre Dame and DeVon Edward’s injury, with a 12:30 ACC matchup against Virginia this weekend for Homecoming. Hopefully Edwards can recover from this setback and will be able to continue his football playing career in the NFL.
