Dantonio weighs in on potential College Football Playoff expansion
Asked over the weekend for his view on any potential expansion of the College Football Playoff field from four teams to eight, Michigan State head coach Mark Dantonio gave a relatively politically correct answer.
"I guess if I'm No. 8, yes I'd want to be in it, but if I'm No. 4, I'd just soon keep it to four," Dantonio said Sunday while at Michigan International Speedway for the Sprint Cup Quicken Loans 400, per the Detroit News.
Perhaps coincidentally -- or perhaps not -- Dantonio's team was eighth in the final CFP standings last year. That flew easily under the radar, however, as all attention at the time the field was announced went to the No. 4 spot, where Ohio State edged TCU and Baylor.
Prior to bowl season, Michigan State did not have much argument it deserved a chance to play for the national championship. After all, the Spartans lost by double digits to the two teams that made the final, Ohio State and Oregon, but a stunning come-from-behind victory over Baylor in the Cotton Bowl moved them up to No. 5 in the final polls published by the coaches and the Associated Press.
"I think it's a better format than it had been," said Dantonio, whose team was fourth in the final BCS standings in 2013. "I think you're always looking to improve things and I'm sure as they move forward they'll try to improve it. College football is the one place probably where there is no tournament to get to the end. That's just the way it has to be. It's a physical game and it takes its toll on you."
