Copeland tosses 5 TDs, Incarnate Word stops TSU 63-44
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Jon Copeland threw for 344 yards and five touchdowns as Incarnate Word picked up its first victory of the year, rolling past Texas Southern 63-44 on Saturday night.
Incarnate Word (1-1) took a 14-0 lead and was up 42-17 at the break but the Tigers rallied in the third to post three touchdowns and close to 49-37 going into the final quarter.
The Cardinals answered when Copeland nailed Kam Williams on a 70-yard scoring strike with 9:53 remaining and Keyondrick Philio pushed in from the 1 to go ahead 63-37 with 3:06 remaining to secure the win.
Williams had six catches for 146 yards and three touchdowns. Ameer King rushed for 157 yards and caught four passes for 49 yards and a touchdown.
TSU's De'Andre Johnson passed for 331 yards and three TDs with Tren'Davian Dickson pulling in eight of those for 221 yards and two scores. Ladarius Owens rushed for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
Incarnate Word takes next week off before opening Southland Conference play against Sam Houston State. The Tigers (0-2) will face Louisiana-Lafayette next week.
