Carlos Davis To Make First Career Start For Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Nebraska Cornhuskers’ redshirt freshman defensive tackle Carlos Davis, will be making his first career start on Saturday against the Wyoming Cowboys.

While that is certainly good news for Davis, the reason he’s starting is less than positive. The youngster is starting because sophomore defensive tackle Mick Stoltenberg is going to miss the game entirely.

While coaches won’t say exactly what happened to Stoltenberg, they are saying it was a non-contact football injury to the knee. This is never something you want to hear, because it can mean anything from a sprain to ligament tear.

The coaches are also trying to tamp down any fears Stoltenberg is going to be missing significant time, saying they expect the sophomore to be ready to go the following week against Oregon. Those who know Stoltenberg’s history likely got a bit nervous considering he’s already had some injury problems with his right knee.

While this injury is on that knee, head coach Mike Riley has said the current injury is unrelated to the previous one. With Carlos Davis sliding into the starting spot this Saturday, Riley has said two other defensive tackles, Logan Rath and Peyton Newell have both moved into the mix at the position and will see at least a little playing time on Saturday in order to give Davis a breather.

Besides Stoltenberg, the rest of the Nebraska Cornhuskers defensive staff are pretty healthy. While safety Nate Gerry wasn’t out of the opener due to an injury, he did miss the first game. Gerry is expected to start against the Cowboys and there’s more good news behind him. Antonio Reed has been fully cleared to play against Wyoming.
