Can Corey Coleman break through as a Heisman candidate?

Baylor wide receiver Corey Coleman is off to a meteoric start to the 2015 season. In three games he has 17 catches for 460 yards for an astonishing Big 12-leading 153.3 yards a game, plus a nation-leading eight touchdowns.

Talk about stretching defenses.

According to NFL.com, Coleman is the top deep threat in the college football. But, it's the player throwing the ball to Coleman, first-year starting quarterback Seth Russell, who is generating the early Heisman Trophy buzz for the Bears. Russell has 15 touchdown passes, tied with USC’s Cody Kessler for the national lead, and he leads the country in passing efficiency (218.86 rating).

The Las Vegas sports book Bovada recently installed Russell fourth in the Heisman odds behind LSU running back Leonard Fournette, Georgia running back Nick Chubb and TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin.

Coleman isn't listed among the top 20. Of course, part of that is simply perception. Only two receivers -- Notre Dame’s Tim Brown in 1987 and Michigan’s Desmond Howard in 1991 -- have ever won the Heisman Trophy.

“My job is to make him (Seth) look good and his job is to make me look good,” Coleman told the Waco Tribune-Herald. “Every time he throws the ball up in the air where I can put my hands on it and go get it, it’s my job to come down with it.”
