Backup USC QB Scroggins to transfer

Southern California quarterback Jesse Scroggins plans to transfer this summer.

USC coach Lane Kiffin made the announcement Monday on the school's website.

Scroggins hasn't thrown a pass in two seasons with the Trojans. In spring ball, he appeared to be losing the three-way competition with touted prospects Cody Kessler and Max Wittek to back up senior Matt Barkley this fall.

Kiffin says Scroggins had a strong academic semester that allowed him to transfer. Scroggins had been slowed by academic difficulties in the past.

Along with Kessler and Wittek in 2013, the Trojans also have a commitment from Max Browne from Sammamish, Wash., who's widely considered the nation's top high school quarterback.
