Back-to-back FCS titles earn NDSU's Klieman a new contract

North Dakota State previously had football coach Chris Klieman signed through the 2020 season, but extending the school's dynasty to five years has called for a new deal.

After winning the FCS national championship in his first two seasons — making it a record five straight for the Bison — the Missouri Valley Conference school has torn up the old contract and rewarded Klieman with a new six-year deal through 2021.

Financial terms were not revealed when the contract was announced Friday by athletic director Matt Larsen. However, the Inforum in Fargo reported Klieman will earn a base salary of $300,000 for the 2016 season with an additional $90,000 in personal appearance and media appearance fees. He would earn more than $450,000 if he reaches performance bonuses, including winning another FCS championship.

The 48-year-old Klieman has a 28-3 record in two seasons as head coach and has been a member of the staff in each of the five national title years. The 2016 season is his sixth in Fargo since he arrived from the staff of his alma mater, Northern Iowa, in 2011.

Klieman succeeded former Bison coach Craig Bohl in 2014 with a five-year contract. Last year, he signed a two-year extension through the 2020 season.

"I am very blessed to have the best job in FCS football," Klieman said. "I am thankful for Matt Larsen and president (Dr. Dean L.) Bresciani for their continued support and belief in our vision as a staff and football program. NDSU has tremendous student-athletes who are receiving an outstanding education and foundation for excellence which are showcased and supported by an unbelievable fan base and institution."

Last year's No. 1 quarterback Carson Wentz is expected to become the highest-drafted non-FBS quarterback in NFL history next Thursday. Despite his departure, the Bison, who also are seeking a sixth straight Missouri Valley title, will return 14 starters to a team that will be favored to win another national championship.
