Austin Peay fires football coach Cannon
(STATS) - Kirby Cannon was fired as Austin Peay's coach Monday after he led the Governors to one win in three seasons.
The announcement came after Austin Peay finished an 0-11 season Nov. 14. The Governors went 0-12 in his first season in 2013 and 1-11 last year, the lone win an Ohio Valley Conference triumph over Murray State.
"I want to thank coach Cannon for his service to Austin Peay and our football program," athletic director Ryan Ivey said. "He has worked hard to move our football program in the right direction, and has done it with class. Unfortunately, we have not made the progress any of us would have liked, and therefore we must move in another direction."
Austin Peay is buying out the remainder of Cannon's contract. During the school's search for Cannon's successor, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator J.D. Sellers will serve as acting coach.
