At Michigan the secondary has been exemplary so far this season

Michigan's stingy defense has been pretty good in general this season, but the Wolverines defensive backs so far can claim a bit of bragging rights over the big fellas up front.

Why is that? Because the Michigan defense is No. 3 in the nation in passing yards allowed and No. 2 in pass efficiency while the team is "only" No. 5 against the run.

Splitting hairs? Sure, but that is how well things have gone so far this season in Ann Arbor.

Michigan did it last week against Maryland despite missing starting cornerback Channing Stribling, and head coach Jim Harbaugh was happy to sing the praises of his secondary when he talked to reporters Monday.

Via MGoBlog, Harbaugh called cornerback Jourdan Lewis an ascending player while also praising the versatility of Jabrill Peppers, who has played cornerback, safety and nickel in coordinator D.J. Durkin's defense.

"I haven’t seen too many things like that," Harbaugh said of Peppers. "And also in the punt return game he’s been extremely valuable and really good. I mean, really good. So he is…there’s really good individual effort.

Harbaugh also liked what he saw from Jeremy Clark, a former safety who started for Stribling at cornerback Saturday at Maryland.

"Clark, again, another interception," Harbaugh said. "Doing a fabulous job, and others. Stribling’s a very good player. Channing…really felt like we needed him. We wanted him out there. He’s an ascending football player, and our hopes are it was just a one-week type of injury and our doctors and training staff and coaches can manage that, and he can manage that to get back on the field soon.”
