Alabama towns plan 'Jameis Winston Day' to celebrate Heisman winner
The Alabama cities of Bessemer and Hueytown have reportedly scheduled a "Jameis Winston Day" celebration for July 5. Winston, the quarterback for defending national champion Florida State University, lists his hometown as Bessemer and played football for Hueytown High.
According to AL.com, the celebration will be highlighted by a presentation at a now-retired high school stadium where Winston finished his high school career in 2011, Gilmore-Vines Stadium. Winston, a 2011 Parade All-American and 2013 Heisman Trophy winner, will be presented with a key to the city and two permanent signs will be placed in the Hueytown community to honor Winston, council member Fran Zinnerman said in the report.
The report adds that Hueytown High plans to retire Winston's No. 8 jersey at some point in the future, but not at this event.
Zinnerman also added that Winston's off-the-field incidents had no impact on the ceremony. Winston was investigated but not charged in a sexual assault case his freshman season, then recently was issued a civil citation for failing to pay for crab at a supermarket.
"None of the accusations or charges against Winston had an impact on this decision," she said in a telephone interview with AL.com. "We were actually scheduling this ceremony when it was convenient for Jameis to get home after the baseball season. ... None of that stuff had any bearing on our decision to honor Jameis. We wanted to recognize him as a Heisman Trophy winner, a graduate of Hueytown High and a resident of Hueytown. That's why he is being recognized."
