Alabama State fires football coach Reggie Barlow

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Alabama State have fired football coach Reggie Barlow two days after the Hornets completed a 7-5 season.

Trustees voted Monday not to renew Barlow's contract after he went 49-42 in eight seasons. The former Alabama State and NFL receiver led the Hornets to five consecutive winning seasons but had a four-game losing streak this season that included a loss to rival Alabama A&M. The program hadn't posted four winning records in a row since the 1967-70 seasons.

The Hornets had tied for the best record in the division in three of the previous four seasons. They finished with a win over Stillman.

Barlow finished his NFL career as the Jacksonville Jaguars' leader in career punt return yards. He led the NFL in that category in 1998.
