Alabama Crimson Tide: Players of the Game, Week 5
Kentucky put up a better fight than Kent State, but ultimately fell victim to the Crimson Tide Machine.
Alabama and Kentucky played even for 15 minutes, which is a lot longer than most thought. Fortunately, Bama woke up and shook out the cobwebs in time to pull out a 34-6 victory. Here are BamaHammer’s picks for MVP’s on offense, defense, and special teams.
ICYMI: Alabama Football: Jeremy Pruitt, Defense, Very Undervalued
Offensive MVP
TIE: Calvin Ridley/Joshua Jacobs
Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports
It was a tossup on who to put here, so why not just put both? Ridley dominated the game from a receiving standpoint, racking up 11 catches for 174 yards and 2 TD’s. Jacobs took over a 3-3 game and led a touchdown drive that was very reminiscent of Mark Ingram’s famous drive against South Carolina in his Heisman season. Jacobs finished the day with 100 yards on 16 carries. Both players are outstanding and deserve to be recognized this week
Honorable Mentions: Jalen Hurts (QB) (after Saban yelled at him)
Defensive MVP
Tim Williams
Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports
Williams was apparently serving an unannounced suspension in the first half, but he more than made up for it in the second half, with 4 solo tackles, 1 sack, 3 TFL, and 2 QB hurries. Tim was a beast, terrifying the Wildcats’ offensive line with a variety of techniques. When Williams is on, he’s unstoppable.
Honorable Mentions: Jonathan Allen (DE), Rashaan Evans (LB), Ronnie Harrison (S), Minkah Fitzpatrick (CB)
Special Teams MVP
JK Scott
Sigh… So last weeks performance by Adam Griffith might have been fool’s gold after all. Scott’s one punt would have been perfect if Tony Brown hadn’t let it inexplicably bounce between his knees and into the end zone for a touchback. Not much going on in the return game aside from another case of the returner allowing the ball to bounce past him instead of fielding it and saving valuable yards. We didn’t get a “Saban mimicking shielding his eyes” this time, but I’m sure something was said about it on the sideline. That area needs some adjustment before it costs us big someday.
Well, there you have it, another day, another win for the Alabama Crimson Tide. Check back next week for our MVP’s of the Arkansas game! Roll Tide!
