Zunic drains 2 late 3s to help Winthrop past Hartford 67-57

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Kyle Zunic drained two straight treys in the final minutes as Winthrop pulled away to win its first game of the season, a 67-57 victory over Hartford on Thursday night.

Josh Ferguson had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Hunter Hale added 15 points and Zunic finished with 14. Charles Falden grabbed six rebounds for the visitors.

The Eagles were up 34-28 at the break. Hartford took a 40-38 lead when P.J. Henry hit a jumper with 13:48 remaining. The teams swapped the lead until Chase Claxton slammed home a dunk to give Winthrop a 46-45 lead at the midway point.

Hartford closed to 56-55 with 3:33 remaining after the Hawks made three straight free throws before Zunic nailed his 3-pointers.

Miroslav Stafl had 15 points for the Hawks (1-1). Moses Flowers added 12 points. Hunter Marks had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Winthrop matches up against Fresno State on the road on Sunday. Hartford matches up against Marist on the road on Tuesday.
