Youngstown State coach Jerry Slocum retires after 12 seasons

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) Youngstown State basketball coach Jerry Slocum has retired after 12 seasons at the school.

In all, he coached for 42 years, with 723 victories. He won 142 games with Youngstown State, which upset top-seeded Oakland and reached the semifinals of this year's Horizon League Tournament. The Penguins lost to Northern Kentucky on Monday night.

The 65-year-old Slocum began coaching Youngstown State in 2005, guiding the team from 2011 to 2013 to consecutive winning seasons for the first time in 29 years. In 2013, he led Youngstown State to its first Division I postseason tournament.

School president Jim Tressel says Slocum ''served young people and the game of basketball in a brilliant fashion.''

Slocum also coached at Nyack, Geneva and Gannon. Youngstown State has begun a national search for a new coach.
