UT Women's Basketball: Longhorns Explode for 15th Straight Win

Texas Women’s Basketball extended its streak to 15 consecutive wins thanks to Ariel Atkins’s sharp-shooting.

Texas guard Ariel Atkins scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Lady Longhorns to an 85-71 road win versus Oklahoma State on Wednesday night.

The Longhorns actually trailed by three points at halftime following a poor second quarter. However, the Longhorns exploded for 28 points in the third quarter, then held the Cowgirls to only 11 points in the fourth quarter.

It was the second-most points for the Longhorns in Big 12 games this season. Karen Aston’s team scored 86 points in a home victory over Oklahoma in January.

Texas Gets Big Contributions Beyond Ariel Atkins

Ariel Atkins led the way with a career-high in points. But, senior center Kelsey Lang filled up the box score.

Lang scored 21 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, and blocked 2 shots. She took care of business with only three personal fouls in a team-high 34 minutes.

PG Brooke McCarty also scored 16 points on 4-7 from three-pointers. McCarty’s shooting helped pace the Horns to 57 percent from the field overall.

Texas Women Continue Record Streak

Texas Basketball has not lost since a hard-fought game against UConn in December. Since then, the Horns have won 15 in a row overall and 11 games to open Big 12 conference play.

Each win in the conference sets a new record for the Texas Women. Prior to this season, the program record was five straight wins to start Big 12 play. Now, they have more than doubled the previous record.

Next up is a home game against Kansas State on Saturday. Then, it’s all eyes on Baylor, which is also 11-0 in conference. Baylor steamrolled Iowa State by 31 points on Wednesday and finishes this week on the road against Texas Tech.

If both teams win on Saturday, it sets up the first Texas-Baylor matchup of the season Monday night in Waco. The return date in Austin is February 20.
