Texas Southern tops Texas-San Antonio 91-80 for first win

LAS VEGAS (AP) Chris Thomas and David Blanks scored 23 points apiece and Texas Southern overcame woeful free throw shooting to defeat Texas-San Antonio 91-80 for its first win of the season on Wednesday.

The Tigers (1-4) trailed 42-35 at halftime but shot 56 percent in the second half. They needed to shoot well from the field because they were 16 of 31 from the foul line after the break and finished 26 of 50 as the Roadrunners committed 34 fouls.

Blanks made a layup and two 3-pointers to put the Jaguars up 51-50 five minutes into the second half. After Ryan Bowie's jumper put the Roadrunners back on top, Blanks scored his 10th-straight point for the Tigers at the 14:19 mark to start another 8-0 run. Thomas made two free throws that made it 58-52 at the 11:33 mark.

Bowie had 22 points and J.R. Harris scored 21 for Texas-San Antonio (1-5).
