SMU Basketball: Four-star guard chooses the Mustangs

SMU basketball receives another commitment in the class of 2017.

SMU head coach Tim Jankovich landed the program’s fourth commitment in the class of 2017 when four-star prospect William Douglas verbally pledged to the Mustangs.

Douglas, a 6-foot-5, 175-pound point guard first delivered the news to his high school coach at Christian Brothers High in Memphis, Tennessee.

“I just felt that they offered everything I was looking for,” Douglas told Scout. “I like the coaching staff and the players and I thought it was the right place for me.”

Along with Douglas, SMU has commitments from power forwards Ethan Chargois and Everett Ray, and point guard Elijah Landrum. Chargois, Ray and Landrum are all three-star prospects in the class of 2017. With their most recent commitment, SMU’s 2017 class moved into the 247Sports top-25 team rankings.

At 6’5”, Douglas has great height for a point guard and can play multiple positions on both ends of the court. He can take advantage of smaller guards on the offensive end of the floor and guard multiple positions on defense.

He is also a good leaper and finisher around the rim. He runs well in transition and isn’t afraid to take it strong to the goal. He’s an athletic, versatile player with a lot of upside.

Douglas held offers from Alabama, Florida State, Memphis, Ole Miss, Oregon and TCU, among others.

Douglas is ranked as the 26th best point guard in the class of 2017 and the number two prospect in the state of Tennessee, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
