Sherburne leads UMBC to 57-49 win over Stony Brook

BALTIMORE (AP) — Senior Joe Sherburne had 17 points and 11 rebounds — his fourth career double-double — to help UMBC beat Stony Brook 57-49 on Wednesday night and extend its win streak to five games.

R.J. Eytle-Rock and Arkel Lamar added 10 points apiece for UMBC (14-9, 6-2 America East Conference). The Retrievers moved into second in the conference standings, a half-game behind Vermont and a half-game ahead of Stony Brook. UMBC handed the Catamounts their lone conference loss, 74-61, last Saturday.

Ricky Council and Jose Placer hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Retrievers the lead for good and spark an 18-4 run that made it 26-15 when Sherburne hit a 3 with 3:40 left in the first half. Stony Brook scored the next five points to make it 26-20 at the break but got no closer.

Akwasi Yeboah had 14 points and 12 points for the Seawolves (17-2, 5-2). Stony Brook, which shot just 30.9 percent (17 of 55), was held below 50 points for the first time since a 57-48 loss to Vermont on Feb. 7, 2015.
