Shead's free throw lifts Texas State over UTSA 69-68

SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Nijal Pearson hit five 3-pointers and scored 26 points and Jaylen Shead hit 1 of 2 free throws with 1 second left to send Texas State to a 69-68 victory over Texas San Antonio on Saturday.

Tre'Larenz Nottingham's layup with 1:11 left to play gave the Bobcats (7-1) a 65-63 lead, but Jhivvan Jackson sank a 3-pointer and hit two free throws to put the Roadrunners (2-6) on top 68-65 with 24 seconds remaining. Pearson buried a 3 to pull the Bobcats even with 13 seconds left. Jackson missed a 3 for UTSA, Byron Frohnen missed a putback and Shead grabbed the rebound, was fouled by Keaton Wallace and hit the game-winning free throw.

Shead finished with seven points, eight rebounds and eight assists and Pearson added seven boards for Texas State.

Jackson topped the Roadrunners with 22 points and Wallace and Giovanni De Nicolao scored 19 and 13, respectively. Byron Frohnen snagged 12 rebounds. UTSA sank 20 of 21 free throws, while the Bobcats made just 9 of 17.
