No. 1 seed Winthrop controls Charleston Southern 92-78 (Mar 02, 2017)

ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP) Keon Johnson scored 31 points and Xavier Cooks scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds to lead No. 1 seed Winthrop past eighth seed Charleston 92-78 in a quarterfinal game of the Big South Conference Tournament on Thursday.

Winthrop plays the winner between Gardner Webb and High Point in a semifinal game Friday night.

Anders Broman scored 15 points on 4-for-6 shooting including 3 for 5 from 3-point range and Roderick Perkins added 12 points for Winthrop (24-6). Johnson had a pair of 3s and Broman added another with 13:16 before halftime for a 24-9 lead and the Eagles led 44-31 at intermission.

Charleston Southern (12-19) started the second half with a 20-7 run and closed to 55-51 on Javis Howard's jumper with 11:35 to play. Johnson made a pair of free throws with 5:43 left for an 11-point lead and led by double digits the rest of the way.

Armel Potter led the Buccaneers with 21 points, Cortez Mitchell 19, and Christian Keeling scored 18 with 11 rebounds.
