Mississippi St. 75, Tennessee St. 65
Ravern Johnson scored a career-high 32 points to lead Mississippi State to a 75-65 win over Tennessee State Friday night.
MSU was 10 of 23 from beyond the arc in their season opener - five of those by Johnson.
TSU hit 23 of 64 shots from the field - six from beyond the arc.
MSU led early, but needed a last-second 3-pointer to tie the game 31-31 at half. TSU rallied for a brief lead midway through the second half, but steady outside shooting by Johnson and the Bulldogs eventually sealed the win.
Other than Johnson, fellow returning starter Kodi Augustus accounted for most of MSU's offensive production with 14 points and 14 rebounds.
Kenny Moore, Patrick Miller and Robert Covington each scored 13 points for TSU.
Renardo Sidney and Dee Bost, two projected starters for the Bulldogs, did not play because of NCAA suspensions.
