Miami Hurricanes Bruce Brown ACC Freshman of the Week

Miami Hurricanes Freshman Guard Bruce Brown has been named as the ACC Freshman of the Week the league announced today. The award is Brown’s first.

The 6’5 guard averaged 11.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.5 assists per game as the Hurricanes defeated Rutgers and Wofford in Miami. Brown also went seven of ten from the floor, connected on two of his four three point attempts and made all seven of his free throws.

Brown led the Hurricanes with nine rebounds in the win over Rutgers in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. He also contributed 11 points on four of six from the floor and three of three from the line against the Scarlet Knights.

Brown had 12 points on three of four from the floor, made two of his three three-point attempts and all four of his free throws against Wofford on Saturday in Hoophall Invitational at American Airlines Arena. Brown also had five rebounds and three steals against the Terriers in 37 minutes played.

Brown has started four of the Hurricanes eight games this season, including the last three. He is averaging 9.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists. Brown is shooting 45.9 percent from the field, connecting on 28-of-61 attempts.

The nine rebounds against Rutgers set a career high, eclipsing the eight he had in his collegiate debut against Western Carolina. Brown’s high water mark in points is 15. He accomplished that twice. Brown had 15 against Penn and tied that mark in the third place game in the Advocare Invitational against Florida.

Brown is second in rebounding in the ACC among Freshmen, slightly behind North Carolina Power Forward Tony Bradley. He is also second in the ACC in steals among freshmen behind Florida State’s Trent Forrest.

Jim Larranaga has gotten outstanding play from his Freshmen this season. In addition to Brown, Dewan Huell and D.J. Vasikjevic have also made significant contributions this.

Huell has started the last two games and is averaging 9.1 points per game and 5.4 rebounds. Huell’s 2.6 offensive rebounds per game are second to Bradley and tied with teammate Kamari Murphy and Louisville’s Mangok Mathiang.

Vasiljevic got off to a blazing start, but has struggled lately. He recovered a bit against Wofford. The Australian by way of Serbia averaged 11.6 points per game and made nine of his 18 three-points attempts in the season’s first three games.

Over the four games that preceded the win over Wofford, Vasiljevic scored 11 points and made just one of nine beyond the arc. Vasiljevic scored six points on two of four three-point shooting and had two rebounds against the Terriers.

Miami next plays South Carolina State at the Watsco Center on Tuesday at 7:00pm.
