Miami Basketball: Is Davon Reed an emerging superstar?
Davon Reed has the opportunity to be more than just a leader for Miami basketball this winter.
The Miami Hurricanes are looking very impressive on the football field. The baseball team just made the College World Series, and is a perennial national contender. If Miami basketball can replicate the success of the year’s past, Miami will have a three-headed-monster atop college athletics.
Davon Reed is the key to doing so.
The 6’6″ junior averaged 11.1 points last year, along with 4.1 rebounds per game. He shot a respectable 38.3 percent from deep and shot an efficient 47 percent from the field overall. As a sophomore, he drained 45.7 percent from behind the arc, and got very little recognition for it.
With the loss of seniors Sheldon McClellan and Angel Rodriguez, however, lots of minutes, points, and ball handling opportunities went out the window as well. That duo averaged 28.9 points per game and led the team in minutes and games played.
Reed has the experience, having played in all three years on campus so far. But it’s his fourth year in which he will need to be a leader on and off the court.
The Ewing, N.J. product demonstrated the ability to take over when he led his team to a victory versus number three Virginia last season. On 6-of-8 shooting, Reed scored 21 points, the highest total on the team.
Reed finished the year strong, scoring in double digits in 11 of his final 14 games. In the two games he failed to reach the plateau, Miami came away with a loss.
Reed is motivated to finish his Hurricane career on a high note and he’s let it be known to the fans.
Coach Jim Larranaga has stated in the past that he sees a true leader in Reed. He needs that to come to fruition this season more than ever. Should Reed take the reins of Miami basketball, not only will the season likely be a success, but he will likely improve his draft stock.
Some players have great intangibles. If Reed can display them along with his extreme talent, it will be a phenomenal year in Coral Gables.
