McKnight tops 1,000 career points; UAPB beat Alabama St.
PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) — Martaveous McKnight had 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting and Shaun Doss scored 20 to help Arkansas-Pine Bluff beat Alabama State 82-71 on Saturday night.
McKnight, who also grabbed eight rebounds, has 1,006 points in just 50 games for the Golden Lions after transferring from Itawamba Community College. Charles Jackson had 15 points for UAPB (5-10, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference).
Reginald Gee had 19 points, Jacoby Ross scored 11 and Tobi Ewuosho had 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Hornets (4-10, 2-1).
UAPB, which led for most of the game, shot 75 percent (18 of 24) in the second half and its 50 points after the break was the Golden Lions' most in a half this season. They jumped to a 15-0 lead but Alabama State rallied to make it 27-all before Ewuosho hit 1 of 2 free throws with 2:56 left in the first half to give the Hornets their first lead. Gene Davis hit a 3 at the buzzer and ASU scored the first seven second-half points to make it 41-32 before UAPB caught fire.
