Matthews helps No. 23 Rhode Island beat Dartmouth 84-60

KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) E.C. Matthews scored 21 points while Hassan Martin and Jared Terrell added 12 points each to help No. 23 Rhode Island beat Dartmouth 84-60 on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.

Matthews missed all but the first 10 minutes of last season because of a torn ACL in his right knee.

The Rams man-to-man defense forced Dartmouth into 20 turnovers which Rhode Island converted into 26 points. The Rams also had a 43-36 rebounding advantage.

Evan Boudreax scored 14 points and Guillen Smith added 13 for the Big Green, who shot 35.2 percent (19-for-54) from the field.
