Maryland Basketball: Maryland Flies Past Saint Peter's
In an afternoon tilt at home, the Maryland basketball team took control from the opening tip.
The Terrapins improve led to 10-1 on the season with a 66-56 win over Saint Peter’s on Saturday afternoon.
Coach Mark Turgeon admitted to the fact that they won this game with the first 20 minutes because they “defended and shot the ball well”, on their way to victory.
In the first half alone, Maryland managed 10 assists on just 13 baskets. Freshman Kevin Huerter made all three shot attempts from deep, his helped get the game rolling.
“When you hit your first shot, your confidence starts going, and teammates tend to find you more.” Huerter said.
Turgeon, however, explained that he is still in equal opportunity mode, and he was trying to even the minutes out. If he wasn’t, the team would have found more rhythm in the “boring” game that ensued for the second half.
Huerter attested by saying “it was frustrating”, pointing toward the second half.
“You weren’t hitting shots on our end, and the way their offense works it makes seem like they’re having long possession so we had to play a lot of defense”.
The game slowed down as Saint Peter’s started to hit some three-point shots, and they shrunk Maryland’s 25 point lead down to just 10 when the horn sounded.
Melo Trimble did not take a shot attempt until a minute inside the second half.
Huerter explained “it shows how unselfish he is” and that if the shots aren’t there, he doesn’t have to force anything”. Trimble finished with five points, but added four assists and two rebounds in 26 minutes on the floor.
Players admit that they haven’t put a full 40 minutes together this season, and Turgeon still stresses that.
They may be 10-1, but they still have so much room to improve. Maryland will face Jacksonville State, Monday night at 7 pm.
