Maryland Basketball: Darryl Morsell to announce on Tuesday

Darryl Morsell is one of the more coveted guards in the 2017 class.

Morsell will announce his college decision on Tuesday afternoon at Mount Saint Joseph High School (Md.) at 3:15 p.m. The four-star guard will decide between Maryland and Notre Dame.

He went to Notre Dame on an official visit in September and also took an official to College Park last month. Morsell also attended Maryland Madness on Oct. 14.

According to InsideMDSports, coach Mark Turgeon had one final in-home visit with Morsell last Wednesday. It also appears that the Fighting Irish have closed the gap over the last month.

Morsell is rated as the No. 79 player in the country and the fifth-best combo guard, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings. He’s also tabbed as the third-best player in the state of Maryland behind just Harvey and Xavier commit Naji Marshall.

Morsell has two very different situations in which he can elect to play college basketball.

Mike Brey and Notre Dame are pitching the fact that Morsell can obtain playing time right away in South Bend.  After this coming season, T.J. Gibbs and DeMatha’s D.J. Harvey are the only guards that will be in the Notre Dame program.

On the other hand, the Terps have quite a bit of depth in the backcourt with Anthony Cowan, Kevin Huerter, and Dion Wiley in the fold for the next three to four years. It’s also a strong possibility that Melo Trimble could return for his senior season.

Maryland is also heavily pursuing five-star guard Trevon Duval in the 2017 class to help bolster their backcourt even further.

Turgeon and his staff already have a pledge from 2017 four-star big man Bruno Fernando.
