Lyles, Lamar help UMBC to 67-63 win at Stony Brook (Jan 31, 2018)

STONY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) Jairus Lyles scored 24 points and Arkel Lamar, who'd made only one free throw in the game, calmly swished two with 1.7 seconds on the clock and Maryland-Baltimore County edged Stony Brook 67-63 on Wednesday night.

Lyles was 10 of 21 from the floor with nine rebounds and five assists, Lamar added 11 points off the bench with a pair of 3-pointers and UMBC (16-8, 7-2 America East Conference) has won three in a row and five of its last six and is off to its best start in 15 seasons in the AEC.

Akwasi Yeboah led with 20 points but Stony Brook (8-15, 3-6) has lost four straight and Wednesday was the sixth time the Seawolves lost a conference game in the final minute.

UMBC led by as many as 15 in the first half, but Stony Brook slashed that down to 28-27 with a Junior Saintel dunk to cap a 14-1 run and, while UMBC led for most of the last nine minutes, it was never by more than three until Lamar put the game away at the very end.

In a critical possession, Stony Brook appeared to lose track of the shot clock and had to heave up a deep 3 that missed, preserving UMBC's 65-63 lead with 2.2 seconds on the clock.
