ICYMI: When anthem singer fails to show, cop grabs mic, wows crowd
The national anthem singer's missing? Call the cops!
No, really. When a snowstorm prevented the scheduled singer from showing up to a recent West Virginia University basketball game, officer Carlton Smith stepped up and belted out the anthem like a pro. Check him out in the video above.
"They were like: 'Hey, we need a favor. Can you sing the anthem?' I said, 'How long do I have?' They said, 'About five minutes,'" Smith told "Inside Edition".
Smith, a WVU grad and a former contestant on "American Idol," had sung the anthem at school events before, but his impromptu performance went viral, and on Monday he got another chance to sing the anthem on "FOX and Friends."
And if the NCAA is smart —€” yes, I said that with a straight face —€” he'll be singing the anthem before the national championship game on April 4 in Houston.
