Hokies Basketball: Knowing Ole Miss

Virginia Tech will host a very talented Ole Miss Rebels basketball team on Sunday and we sat down with Drew Moak of Ole Hotty Toddy.

Ole Miss point leader Deandre Burnett is averaging 21.6 per game, how do you see him producing against Tech?

Drew: “Burnett usually does a good job of getting his points. Sometimes that comes from hitting a few threes and other times it comes from getting to the free throw line. He is a “volume shooter” so efficiency is the key with him.”

With Tech down two big now, do you see the Rebels taking advantage of the paint or post on Sunday?

Drew: “Ole Miss has a really good post player in Sebastian Saiz, but it is not the overall strength of the team. It is a guard oriented team, but if they see a mismatch they will exploit it. Saiz has had two games with 20 plus points and 15 plus rebounds.”

What player or players should the Hokies focus on defensively when Ole Miss is running the floor?

Drew: “The guards are pretty dangerous with guys like Burnett, Terrence Davis and Cullen Neal. The thing to look for with Ole Miss is are they settling for the three point shot.”

If Ole Miss forces turnovers, forces Tech into mistakes, can they knock off a hot Hokies team?

Drew: “They certainly have the capability to, but Ole Miss has to limit mistakes as well. This team has had its own issues with turnovers. It’s a team that’s played pretty well this year minus one atrocious half against middle Tennessee state.”

Drew also gave us his prediction of the game saying that the Hokies would go on to defeat the Rebels, 84-79.
