Hampton tops Howard 75-61 behind Marrow's 23 (Feb 11, 2017)
HAMPTON, Va. (AP) Jermain Marrow scored 23 points and made 11 of 12 free throws and Hampton beat Howard 75-61 on Saturday to win its fifth straight conference game and fourteenth straight in the series.
Howard rallied to a 43-40 second-half lead after a 13-4 run capped by James Miller's back-to-back layups, but Hampton was back on top 60-55 after Marrow's 3-point play sparked a 10-2 run capped by his 3-pointer for a 65-55 lead with 4:47 left. Howard closed to 67-61 on Charles Williams' layup with 2:23 left but got no closer.
A.J. Astroth scored 14 points and Charles Wilson-Fisher added 10 with four blocks for the Pirates (11-13, 8-3 Mid-Eastern Athletic), who outrebounded the Bison 45-35 and made 7 of 15 from behind the arc to Howard's 2 of 11.
Wilson-Fisher put Hampton up 14-11 with a jumper, sparking a 6-2 run capped by Lawrence Cooks' 3-pointer for a 19-13 lead. The Pirates led 36-30 at halftime after shooting 5 of 9 from behind the arc to the Howard's 1 of 8.
Miller scored 20 points, Williams and Tyler Stone added 13 apiece, and Marcel Boyd grabbed 12 rebounds for Howard (5-20, 2-8), which has lost six straight.
